Before you zip up your suitcase or double-check your passport, hear from the students who’ve already walked this path. These are the small truths, quiet surprises, and real advice they wish they’d had before volunteering with Therapy Volunteers.
Dear Future Me,
I know you’re nervous. You’re flying solo, going somewhere new, and you’re not totally sure if you’re “qualified” to do this. But take a deep breath—you’re going to be just fine. The people you meet, the kids you work with, and the local team supporting you will become one of the most unforgettable parts of your college experience. Lean in. Ask questions. Say yes.
— Amanda, OT student
Dear First-Time Traveler,
Pack lighter. Trust me. You won’t need three pairs of shoes or the full-size conditioner. What you will need is a little room in your heart for what’s coming. The moments that stick with you won’t be the perfectly posed photos—they’ll be things like walking into a classroom and hearing a child call you by name. One week really can change you.
— Marcus, SLP grad student
Dear Volunteer Who’s Wondering If It’s Worth It,
Yes. A hundred times yes. I signed up to “get hours,” but I left with so much more. I learned how to work without a full clinic setup. I learned how to communicate without perfect Spanish. I learned how to listen better. This trip gave me back my passion for therapy. I didn’t expect that.
— Kayla, BCBA candidate
Dear You, Right Before Takeoff,
Let yourself be open to what this is—not what you expect it to be. It won’t be perfect. Some days will feel hard or messy. But in between all of that? There will be joy. Growth. Laughter. And something you’ll carry with you for a long time.
— Jared, PT student
To anyone about to step into a week of service with Therapy Volunteers: you’ve got this.
Bring your skills, your questions, and your heart. The rest will fall into place.
