Kayla is a speech-language pathologist with over 8 years of pediatric experience in early intervention, outpatient, and home-based settings. She specializes in AAC evaluations, caregiver coaching, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Kayla earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communicative Disorders and Spanish from the University of Alabama and her Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Arizona State University. She currently serves as the speech therapist at our clinic in Belize, where she is dedicated to providing individualized care to children and families. Fun fact: Kayla lived in Japan for 3 years and loves exploring new cultures.

Occupational Therapist from Shorewood, IL
Amrita is an occupational therapist with a strong background in special education and caregiver training. She specializes in fostering effective communication, designing interventions that promote independence, and equipping families and staff with practical strategies to support children’s growth. Amrita earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and her Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Chicago State University. She currently serves as the occupational therapist at our clinic in Belize, where she is committed to creating meaningful and lasting impact. Fun fact: Amrita has traveled to nearly 30 countries and is always up for an adventure.

Heidi is a speech-language pathologist from Washington with over 20 years of experience supporting children and families. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and her Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from San Diego State University. After her first one-week trip to Belize, Heidi knew Therapy Volunteers International was the perfect place to combine her love of service with her professional expertise. She later spent a full year at the Belize clinic—an experience she describes as a highlight of her career. Heidi’s background spans school-based, pediatric in-home, and clinic settings, with a focus on supporting children with autism, collaborative school services, and mentoring emerging clinicians. She currently divides her time between her role as a school-based SLP in Washington and teaching online for Grand Canyon University.

Teresa, known as Tess, is a speech-language pathologist from Pennsylvania. She earned her undergraduate degree from Penn State University and her Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After completing her clinical fellowship in Oahu, Hawaii, she began her career with a strong focus on culturally responsive care. Tess joined Therapy Volunteers International in 2024, serving children and families in Belize City and surrounding districts. She now provides services virtually to students across Pennsylvania through teletherapy, continuing her commitment to accessible care.

Amy is both an Occupational Therapist and a Program Coordinator with Therapy Volunteers International. In addition to providing therapy services, she helps manage and coordinate volunteer programs in Belize. This dual role allows Amy to combine her clinical expertise with her organizational skills, ensuring that volunteers and families receive meaningful support and impactful experiences.

Deborah Shieh is an accomplished Speech-Language Pathologist renowned for her expertise in diverse settings encompassing education, home health, and outpatient care. With a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Kean University and extensive experience in evaluating and treating a broad spectrum of speech, language, and cognitive deficits, she has established herself as a leader in the field. Notably, Deborah served as Therapy Volunteers' inaugural SLP in Belize and currently serves as the Chair of the Board, showcasing her commitment to enhancing therapeutic interventions and advocating for patient welfare.

Melissa is a passionate Occupational Therapist with a Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Misericordia University. Based in the Philadelphia area, she brings extensive experience working with children and families across private practice, school-based, and outpatient settings. Melissa’s commitment to making therapy accessible beyond her local community has led her to participate in multiple volunteer trips to Belize with Therapy Volunteers International, where she has supported children and caregivers through hands-on clinical work and education. In addition to her clinical practice, Melissa has enjoyed sharing her knowledge as a university instructor and fieldwork supervisor, helping to inspire and prepare the next generation of therapists.

Emily received her Bachelor's degree in marketing at the University of Denver in Colorado, staying for a few years after graduation to begin her career. In Denver, she volunteered for a local early education organization focused on inclusion for children of all abilities, specifically those with special needs. Originally a native of Minnesota, she returned to the Midwest to be closer to family in Chicago, continuing her career in marketing. She is passionate about improving access to therapy services for special needs children, as she has seen firsthand how important the impact of therapies has been for her brother, Peter, who has autism.

With a passion for empowering children with disabilities to reach their full potential, Amy is excited to leverage her unique skills for children around the world.

Idar Lamo, a Norwegian native with a BA from the University of Roehampton in London, brings a global perspective, having lived in New Zealand and Australia. As the current COO of a leading multidisciplinary pediatric therapy clinic in Chicago, Idar leverages his expertise in pediatric therapy and administration. Passionate about merging his knowledge in this field with his enthusiasm for creating impactful community programs worldwide, he is driven to utilize his leadership skills and experience to develop initiatives that benefit communities on an international scale.
